1972 De Tomaso Pantera – American Muscle Meets Italian Design

The De Tomaso Pantera marked a bold collaboration between American power and Italian style. Styled by Carrozzeria Ghia and penned by American-born designer Tom Tjaarda, the Pantera debuted at the 1970 New York Auto Show, hitting the market in 1971 and instantly turning heads.

This striking 1972 example—finished in a vibrant green—features a freshly rebuilt, numbers-matching (03077) 351 Cleveland V8, tuned and ready to perform. The engine has been JetCleaned, decked, bored, and honed, and upgraded with forged pistons, a Crane hydraulic roller camshaft, aluminum intake, Holley carburetor, factory headers, and MSD ignition with billet distributor. It’s balanced, broken in, and dyno-tested at 461 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

Performance is matched by handling thanks to a fully independent double wishbone suspension with coilovers, rack and pinion steering, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Braking comes courtesy of power four-wheel discs, and a ZF 5-speed manual transaxle with a 4.22 Posi differential puts all that power to the pavement.

Additional highlights include:

  • Early-style small bumpers

  • Power windows and air conditioning

  • AM/FM/Cassette stereo with full instrumentation

  • Original Campagnolo alloy wheels (refinished by Wheels America) wrapped in fresh rubber: 205/60R15 (front) and 295/50R15 (rear)

With 130 more horsepower than stock, this Pantera is a visceral thrill to drive—and with only 2,131 produced, it’s a rare piece of automotive history that’s poised to keep appreciating.

Another unicorn from the team that makes dreams real. (G-suit and helmet not included.)

I’m 6’2″, will I fit behind the wheel?

We did a little research online and you should be fine

Doug DeMuro did a review of one of these, I believe he’s 6′ 2″, and he said while it was close, it had more room than most Italian exotics of the time. Check out the video, you can see how close his head is to the headliner. It will definitely depend on how much space you like between head and roof!
