1940 Ford Custom Deluxe Coupe – “Le Cobre”

This is a truly unique 1940 Ford Custom Deluxe Coupe with a fascinating history and one-of-a-kind craftsmanship. The car’s custom journey began back in 1956 when its original owner from East Bridgewater, MA, spent 900 hours transforming it into a sleek, European-inspired two-seater, built entirely with American parts and nicknamed “Le Cobre.” You can see the attached 1956 article for the full story.

Over the years, the car saw several iterations before spending a long time off the road. It was rediscovered by the current owner in 1994, who undertook a full restoration and added his own distinctive touches.

Powertrain & Mechanical Details

  • Rebuilt Mercury 351 V8 with Edelbrock 600 CFM 4-barrel carb and custom “bat wing” air cleaner from an early Cadillac

  • FMX Cougar automatic transmission with 3.50 gear ratio and new John’s rear-end third member

  • 12-volt electrical system with alternator

  • Approximately 5,000 miles driven since the build; drivetrain had 28,000 miles when installed

  • Jade Metallic two-stage paint (very nice overall; has not yet been sanded and buffed)

Exterior & Custom Bodywork

Condition & Notes

This car is in excellent overall condition, with beautiful bodywork, excellent chrome, and well-fitted panels. It has been carefully maintained, always garage-kept, and remains a real conversation starter wherever it goes. It runs, drives, and handles impressively for a custom build of this era.
