Perhaps the most legendary out of all the Mercedes racing cars is the 300 SLR that was driven by Stirling Moss to an overall victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia, setting a record that was never broken. In the early 2000s, Mercedes wanted to pay homage to that famed race car and tapped McLaren Cars - a company they owned 40% of at the time- to help with creating something appropriately special. This 2005 Mercedes Benz McLaren SLR Coupe was sold new at Mercedes Benz of Beverly Hills and has been under the care of just 3 owners from new.Finished in the launch color of Crystal Laurite Silver, there is no better shade to show off the stunning details of this ultra-limited production coupe. When new, this car had an MSRP in excess of $450,000 and was pitted against performance car icons like the Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT. Unlike those cars which are more hardcore, track focused vehicles, the SLR is really the ultimate in grand touring, a car that is comfortable inside, has room for luggage and can cruise all day at enormous speed, making it a far more usable vehicle than its competitors at the time. That being said, this car has plenty of race technology in it as well, utilizing a carbon composite monocoque and chassis structure which keeps the weight down, while ensuring the car is quite stiff torsionally. The stunning design with its long front bonnet and short rear overhang, is iconic and looks even better with the turbine-style 10-spoke wheels this car is fitted with.The interior is finished in Orion Gray and, although definitely sportier than nearly any Mercedes built before or after, retains the company's stellar build quality and finishings. A pair of carbon bucket seats are comfortable, supportive and look the part. Settle in and you are met with a 3-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel and blue faced gauges with a 220 mph speedometer staring back. The center stack is simple and features a switch towards the top that deploys the hidden decklid spoiler / airbrake with a simple push. Atop the gear selector sits an Engine Start button behind a hidden cover that adds some sense of occasion to the drive and makes every startup feel like an event.Powering the SLR is a supercharged 5.5-liter V8 that produces 617 horsepower and 575lb-ft of torque. The long hood is a reminder that this car has a mid-front-engine layout with the front of the engine sitting behind the front axle. Power is sent through a 5-speed Speedshift automatic gearbox to the rear wheels and acceleration is remarkable with a 3.6 second 0-60 time and 0-100 coming in just 7.9 seconds. Top speed is said to be 207 mph and the car is known to get there without event, just as you would expect from a Mercedes. One of the big advancements on the SLR when new was the use of Carbon Ceramic brakes, as it was one of the first street cars to offer this technology.
