Shelby American was founded by Carroll Shelby in 1962 to build and market high-performance parts and modified cars. Automobiles produced by Shelby American include the Ford Mustang-based Shelby GT350, Shelby GT500, and Shelby GLHS. The company was highly involved in racing, winning the first title for an American constructor at the World Sportscar Championship in 1965.
StyleShelby's 1965-1966 cars were small and light, often called Cobras (which was the Ford-powered AC-based two-seat sports car also produced by Shelby during that time period). All cars featured the Windsor 289 cu in HiPo K-Code 271 horsepower V8 engine, modified with a large 4-barrel Holley 715 CFM carburetor to produce 306 bhp at 6,000 rpm.
