"1968 Cadillac Eldorado Hardtop
""Only one car can make a Cadillac owner look twice. Longtime Cadillac owners, accustomed to the finest, have high regard for the spirited glamour of the 1968 Fleetwood Eldorado, the world's finest personal luxury car. While they may prefer one of Cadillac's traditionally styled models, they admire the bold concept of the Eldorado. For it reflects the fresh vitality of each of Cadillacs eleven great new body styles for 1968."" From the Eldorado print ad.
For consignment a 1968 Cadillac Eldorado hardtop with a title verified 60,144 actual miles. A two owner car, and a model in its eight generation when this body style was introduced in 1967. It only lasted until 1970 but that was long enough for a Mr. Presley to take notice. He never drove anything boring and owned several of these including a gold '68 that Pricilla drove regularly.
Exterior
There are some fine lines here, and they're doused in single stage Silverpine Green paint and topped with a black vinyl roof that hovers over the cabin, a two door affair with long windows and a small quarter window just ahead of the C-pillar. For design, let's start at the front where carefully crafted headlight covers create a grille that goes end to end, flanked by protruding marker lights, and giving onlookers their first taste of opulence. A rise in the hood adds dimension while pointed fender tops carry directional indicators artfully embedded 1/3 of the way, not at the ends of the fenders as was typical. The shoulder line dips slightly just before a body bend juts upward at the dogleg, making its way along the top of the rear pointed fenders which meld into vertical flush tail lights. The rear decklid is mostly flat, but also drops sharply at the end where it and the chrome bumper come to a terminating conclusion. Imperfections include some bubbling near a wheel opening and some paint runs.
Interior
Let's see what the interior designer came up with! Dark green door panels are elegant for the time with a hockey stick shaped simulated woodgrain insert in green vinyl panel that have two courtesy lights and an electric switch panel at the end of the stick. Each door has a carpeted kick panel and both doors are in spectacular shape. The green leather split bench is configured with thick bottoms and much more narrow uppers with button back accents and it's in great shape. The color and design are copied on the back bench, also in fine condition. Some cracks are found in the green plastic rim of the steering wheel which leads to a typical late 60's horizontal instrument cluster over a woodgrain mid panel that houses the climate panel and AM/FM radio. A GM rheostat dial is located on the left side of the dash to control inside temperature with a turn of the dial. As an early front wheel drive car, the floor up front is wide and flat and this case, covered with a full length Cadillac rubber mat over green carpet. The headliner above with clipped shoulder belts is in nice shape as is the cavernous trunk covered in gray flannel mats.
Drivetrain
Under the huge hood we find a 472ci V8 rated at 375 horsepower and getting fuel via a 4-barrel carburetor. Not far away is the TH425 3-speed automatic keeping power up front with 2.97 gears. Power brakes are on board with discs up front and drums in the rear, all behind 15-inch wheels wrapped in 205/75R15 tires with a mid 2020 date code.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with minimal surface rust. It's odd to see a car from the 60's without a drive shaft, but here we are, underneath where the bottom is mostly flat. Dual exhaust runs along the outer edges of the undercarriage, meet at single stock style muffler, and leave via one tailpipe just beyond a resonator. Torsion bar suspension is found up front and leaf springs are out back.
Drive-Ability
Through the gates of Graceland we go, or as we like to call it, the mall garage, and onto the test loop. Our consignor says you can ""drive this anywhere"" and in fact, he made the 40 mile trek to get to the mall with no issue. This is a smooth cruiser in the style of large, luxury cars of the 60's and has very good power to motivate the Detroit steel into forward momentum. Other than the power antenna not working, all other functions do in this low mileage survivor from 1968. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Style, rarity, panache, and if you happen to be collecting every model Elvis owned, this one will have to be in your stable. In the days when personal luxury cars were classy behemoths with hoods the size of football fields and more switches than a politician's platform, this Eldorado is representative of a special time in Americanautomotive history. This '68 is in excellent condition and your ticket into the Cadillac LaSalle club!
