"2000 Plymouth Prowler
""It was at Pacifica, Chrysler's design studio in Carlsbad, California where the idea to make a factory hotrod first came about. According to Kevin Verduyn, a former Chrysler designer, an intern threw out the notion of designing a hotrod when they were brainstorming. After being green lit for production, the Plymouth Prowler production model was revealed in 1996 and finally came to market in 1998 amidst quite the media fanfare."" Motorious.com
For consignment, a 2000 Plymouth Prowler convertible with a title verified 20,408 actual miles. Just 2,746 Prowlers were produced in 2000 and only 193 of them were red. Wild and unique, our one family car features some custom artwork that makes it stand out from the Prowler crowd.
Note: This vehicle comes with a disclaimer from Daimler Chrysler stating that the frame was replaced when the new as it did not meet engineering requirements.
Exterior
Black bumpers and gravel guards on the rear fenders contrast sharply with the Prowler Red paint and the hood, fenders, and shoulder line are dressed up with some subtle pinstriping. It's the rear hatch that provides a huge canvas for artistic expression, in this case an airbrushed tiger whose head takes up much of the space with the body to the right, creating almost a three dimensional vision of a big cat staring you down. Heavily staggered wheels were standard with 20-inch in back and 17-inch in front, chrome five spokes that enhance the car's profile and add to the incredibly wide rear section. Overall, the paint is nice with imperfections noted as some scrapes and touch ups on the nose and in various places, scratches on the fenders, a ding, and some curb rash on the wheels. The black canvas top presents in good condition with some dust marks.
Interior
Color matched inserts and Prowler emblem contrast with the black plastic door panels, both in nice shape although switches are missing on the passenger door. Pillowy black leather bucket seats combine comfort and sportiness, topped by roll bar headrests and the passenger's has a red cover. A robust black steering wheel frames the column mounted tachometer while the gauges are moved to the center of the dash in a color keyed face plate with dueling Prowler emblems and white faced dials. Vents top a center stack that contains the stock AM/FM/Cassette radio over the basic A/C panel while a chrome base plate houses the black booted shifter in front of the requisite cup holder, all over gray carpet. Under the rear hatch is a thin compartment above which the convertible top is stowed. The interior presents in very nice condition with no major cosmetic flaws.
Drivetrain
Clean and uniformly black, we find the 3.5 liter V6 under the hood, fuel injected and rated at 254 horsepower. An AutoStick 4-speed automatic transaxle sets it in motion, planting the power in back through 3.89 gears. Power disc brakes are employed on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Minimal surface rust and dry conditions prevail underneath where things are clean. Dual exhaust runs through a Broiler Exhaust kit and exits via upturned tips behind the car. Independent coil over suspension is found in front and in the back of this retro rod.
Drive-Ability
Low mileage and well cared for by one family translates to a car that starts, accelerates, handles, and stops well. Yes, we have no complaints about this comfortable and adequately quick car that turns on a dime and sticks to the road. All functional items work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Just as vintage hot rods and modern street rods will never go out of style, we're thinking the Prowler will always be regarded as an uncommon classic. Hagerty agrees, putting the Prowler on their Bull List in 2024 as one of the best collector cars to buy right now. There's simply no way not to notice one of these on the street and their endlessly cool profile complements their comfortable ride and modern features if you look past the cassette radio. Most of all, they are fun, and that's what the classic car world is all about for most of us!
